American travel agents, from all across the United States descended in Jamaica this week as the island continues to bolster its international profile. Even today there are some 500 agents visiting the island as part of the “Wish You Were Here” familiarization program organized by the Jamaica Tourist Board and private sector partners.

The Minister of tourism, Edmund Bartlett, welcomed this little venture. He said that they established this campaign, not only in the United States, Europe and Canada, but in many other markets as well. They want to bring the partners to the destination, so that they can be on property, on the beach, in the Jamaica rentals and moving around the attractions. The program will initiate them to the treasures of Jamaica and showcase how wonderful the destination really is.

American officials have embarked on the ambitious program ahead of the winter tourism season. The island is expecting to equal the visitors that it welcomed to its shores in 2009. However, the island could do better than that this year as more people are looking to travel.

Mr Barrlett went on to say that the real tests for Jamaica are the airlifts that they have, the number of seats that they will have available for the winter and also the level of forward bookings that they are getting through traditional sources. People are hearing a lot more about Jamaica by way of the internet and social media.
