Jamaica Beauty Queen To Promote Tourism On The Island

Former beauty queen, Nicole Haughton has realized her dream to work in the tourism sector by landing a job with the Jamaica Tourism Board.

Haughton, won Miss Jamaica Universe in 1999 and went on to represent Jamaica in the Miss Universe finals, and though she did not win the title, she became an ambassador for Jamaica. As part of her duties she travelled abroad to promote Jamaica's tourism sector. It is during this time she realized that this is what she wanted to do. "I knew then that I wanted to work with the JTB to help promote Jamaica. In 2000, I decided to go to London to do my master's degree in tourism marketing at the University of Surrey," she said.

Her job involves working on special projects to promote Jamaica. She has worked in the UK before and feels that there are differences in the work culture between the two countries. However, she is adjusting and is happy to be in a job she loves.

Nicole feels that her job is not easy but it is rewarding and keeps her extremely busy. She believes that women in the workplace should always be professional, despite the fact that they often have to work harder to prove themselves. However, performance is key and adds value to your work.

To do justice to her job, she recently travelled through the island to see Jamaica through the eyes of a tourist. Nicole highlights the naturally warm, hospitable personality of Jamaicans among their unique qualities. "This is what blows many tourists' minds and keeps them returning. The truth is, you can find sun, sand and beach in any Caribbean island, but only in Jamaica do you find that people are so embracing."

So what draws people to the island are not just its attractions but also the warmth and all-encompassing nature of the people. To experience the best of services and hospitality, they prefer to set base in Jamaica rentals comprising private villas, cottages and apartments. Given the fact that the high season is approaching it is advisable to book your Jamaica accommodation in advance. You can browse through our Silver Sands Jamaica listings to find a villa or cottage that is best to your taste and requirements.
