Reggae Sumfest 2010 in Montego Bay, July 18 - 24

Jamaica is synonymous with reggae, an integral part of the everyday life of the locals. Reggae developed from the earlier musical styles of mento (similar to Trinidadian calypso), rocksteady, and ska, and reached its peak in the 1970s, with the works of Bob Marley and the Wailers. In fact it was Marley who was largely responsible for popularizing reggae in the rest of the world.

Reggae Sumfest was incepted in 1992 and in the years that followed gradually rose in prominence to take centre stage in the world’s music scene. The event kick starts with a large party held at the Walter Fletcher beach; however the main attraction is the street party held at Montego Bay’s main thoroughfare, Gloucester Avenue. Concerts are held at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex also known as the Bob Marley Entertainment Center. Other venues for the event include Rose Hall Beach Park, Pier 1 disco, and even at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville in Ocho Rios.

This year the event will take place between July 18 and 24 in Montego Bay and will see acts by international celebrities such as Chris Brown, Shaggy, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, and many others.

If you are a fan of reggae and Bob Marley, Jamaica is the place to be in July. Given the popularity of the event, note accommodations on the island get booked well in advance. To be near Montego Bay, you can consider staying in Silver Sands villas and take advantage of the special offers valid on some of the villas and cottages.
