Jamaica Celebrates Independence Day on August 6
 Join Jamaicans all over the World - wear green, gold and black on August 6.
Jamaica comes alive on Independence Day, August 6, with music and dancing to commemorate the anniversary of its independence, which took place in 1962. The best of the festivities can be witnessed in Kingston, where locals in costumes participate in a gala parade to showcase different aspects of Jamaican culture.
The Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture the Honourable Olivia Grange, MP, has announced that this year's Independence Day celebrations will be staged under the theme "I Believe in Jamaica".
Outlining the celebrations she said, "We will be hosting a street parade in our nation's capital which will include costumed groups and marching bands leading to the National Stadium. When we get to the National Stadium we will truly celebrate our successes as a nation while looking forward to a great future with a programme designed to capture the imagination and lift the national spirit."
There will also be the annual Independence Day Street Dance in Half-Way-Tree Square.
"The celebrations will be truly national as a major Independence Street Gala will be hosted in Western Jamaica; and there will be similar celebration events in major town centres across the island."
Jamaicans from all walks of life gather to enjoy the Independence Day celebrations. Decked out in costumes of many colours, these patrons enjoy the excitement that accompanies the Independence Day Parade.
Celebrations run up to Emancipation Day on the 6 August when traditional Junkanoo dancers recall the days of slavery and modern day Jamaican culture is celebrated in all its exotic glory. History has it that many slaves journeyed to the hilltops on Friday, August 1, 1838 to witness the sunrise as a symbolic gesture to the new beginning in their lives. In the morning, large congregations joined in the Thanksgiving services, which were held in several chapels and churches across the island.
Guests of Jamaica villas have complained about most business places being closed on this public holiday, but, to facilitate its clients, the Villa Mart at Silver Sands Jamaica will be open for business as usual.
