Jamaica Festivals and Fairs

If you know anything about reggae, you know that Jamaica is the home for the reggae event of the summer. Reggae Sumfest, short for Summerfest, includes an array of parties and gigs in Montego Bay and other areas. Throughout the week world-renowned performers, who run the plethora of styles and conscious vibes throughout the country, are featured. You’ll see everybody sipping on Red Stripe and grooving in the warm sunshine and atmosphere.

During the third week of June, you can take part in the Ocho Rios Jazz Festival in the Village of Eight Rivers. Besides offering free daily jazz jams, a school band competition, and Jamaican ska, it also offers time to spend with your family or friends with its laid-back atmosphere.  This festival always features internationally known performers from the island itself and all over the world.

If you do not like the idea of a film festival, have you ever visited a film festival on a tropical island with outstanding beaches?  If you are wondering if there is a film festival like this, you are in luck.  The Jamerican Film and Music Festival is held in Montego Bay in August or September on an annual basis. The festival was created by the filmmaker Sheryl Lee Ralph and aims to support Jamaican film-making and to prove that high-quality talent is born there as well as being on both sides of the camera. The original idea was to give the opportunity to riders to pitch their scripts and executives a chance to check them out over Red Stripe and barbecue chicken.  Buying a pass allows you to enter four days of film screenings, panel discussions, writer’s workshops, master classes, and other related events.

If fishing is your forte, the Port Antonio Blue Marlin Tournament should be right up your alley.  This tournament has been around in the Caribbean longer than any other and it takes place during October every year.  Blue Marlin is the most agile and tricky fish to catch so it is every fisherman’s thrill.  If you are not interested in entering the tournament, it is free to watch and starts at 4:30 pm every day during the week of the tournament.  Once you see one of the Marlins that may be up to 16 feet long, you will realize why the competitors must strap themselves in.

Mysilversands at Silver Sands Jamaica offers day trips to Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Port Antonio. No matter what time of the year you decide to visit the island, you’ll be able to enjoy the best of the island’s festivals and fairs and of course, great deals at Jamaica rentals.
