Jamaica Welcomed More Than One Million Visitors In The First Six Months Of The Year

Jamaica is upbeat about its tourism figures and is celebrating the latest in a series of exciting milestones, that latest being that it has recorded more than one million visitors who came here during the first six months of this year.

This is the first time the island has welcomed so many visitors during such a short period. The figures represent the robust strength of the recovery in the Caribbean region, and more so in Jamaica, following the global recession.

Data from the Jamaica Tourism Organization (JTO) show that a total of 1,010,896 foreigner visitors passed through the island between January 1st and June 30th this year.

This represents a 4.1 per cent increase on the figures for the same period of 2009, with earnings from visitor arrivals also up by 2.4 per cent to US$1.9 billion.

The development of the Falmouth cruise terminal is expected to give a further boost to the tourism industry. Indeed, the tourism minister Ed Bartlett expressed his optimism Jamaica’s tourism performance will continue to improve.

According to Bartlett, there were positive signs in the months of July, August and September. He also pointed out that the increased arrivals and earnings come at a time when the worldwide recession is taking a toll on economies of the world and during a period when Jamaica had its own civil challenges.

Jamaica has recently been voted as amongst the top ten destinations in the world for Island Escapes by the world’s largest travel site, TripAdvisor. With the High Season approaching, the island is expecting a large turnover of visitors planning their winter getaways. Private Jamaica rentals comprising villas, cottages and apartments are fast emerging as the most popular accommodation options for quality stay and services at affordable rates as also for unique experiences.
