Cruise Ship, Voyager of the Seas, to Call at Falmouth Today, 17 February 2011

Two of Jamaica's major tourist destinations, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, have benefitted from cruise shipping for many years. Tourism in Jamaica will get a further impetus when the newly constructed Falmouth pier welcomes Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas cruise ship on its maiden call today.

For some locals the idea of a ship docking in Falmouth may seem a novelty but the town had harboured several ships in the 19th century when sugar was king.

The Voyager of the Seas will bring in 3000 passengers and will mark the beginning of a new era in the rich legacy of Falmouth.

Though the cruise-ship terminal is expected to be completed by the end of June, it is well prepared to host Voyager of the Seas.

The world's largest cruise ship, Oasis of the Seas is expected to call at the Falmouth port in the month of March and by this time the repaving work and the beautification of the town will be complete.

Residents and the stakeholders of the hospitality industry including Jamaica rental communities such as Silver Sands villas are upbeat about the new business opportunities the cruise ships will bring.
