On a hot sunny morning, Ringo stood shirtless at his stall at the side of the road close to the entrance to the Blue Lagoon, which marks the Eastern boundary of the San San villas in Port Antonio, Jamaica. His sunglasses, hung from a string around his neck, bounced around on his muscular dark chest. A small knitted black hat, decorated with single red, white, and green stripes and a print of the leaf of the ganja plant, topped a very short hair style. Ringo stretched out his left forearm and shook an array of necklaces draped there, making a swishing sound, then went on to explain: “Yeah man, these are all natural seeds from the mountains.”

He reached back to his makeshift stall, partially sheltered from the streaming sunlight with a sheet of plastic, and produced a short dried branch, saying “As you can see, this is the wild coffee we use to make the necklaces.” Ringo shifted the branch from his right hand to his left and slid his fingers over the red beads of a necklace. He compared them to those still on the branch, pointing out the red berries on the dried branch. “It’s natural colour. No varnish, no paint, no dye - just natural.”
Ringo stretched out his left forearm further so the dozens of necklaces draped there could be more easily seen and, fingering one of the necklaces, continued with seriousness, “Along with we use bits of bamboo and mimosa seeds and cocoa beans.“ He carefully pointed out each raw material used on the necklace as he mentioned them.
As the bright sun glanced off the single gold stud pierced through his right nostril, Ringo shook his left forearm and stroked the necklaces with his right hand so it made that rustling sound, he explained: “People always like to get the natural seeds dem from the mountain. Yeah!”
