Visit the Ruins of Stewart Castle in Trelawny near Silver Sands

Not more than a ten minute drive from Silver Sands, going West towards Falmouth, is the area known as Stewart Castle. Most Jamaicans have no idea why the area is called Stewart Castle. Some have heard something about the ruins of a castle there. Very few have ever been there to see the ruins themselves.

Stewart Castle is a designated Jamaica National Heritage Trust site.

The ruins of Stewart Castle are easily accessible from the North Coast highway and well worth a visit. It started as a sugar plantation built with slave lbour in the mid 1750s and expanded considerably over the years. The owners were very aware of their vulnerability and concerned for their saftey, making the rectangular cut-stone mansion a virtual fortress, able to withstand a siege.
